Checks
Google cuts titles and descriptions by pixel width, not a set number of characters, and sometimes rewrites them. These limits are close estimates. Not affiliated with Google.
Google bolds words from the search in your description. Add the phrase you want to rank for to see it.
Writing tips
Write for the person searching, then for Google
- 01Lead with what the page isPut the service or topic first and your business name last, like “WordPress Maintenance Services | Your Business.”
- 02Give every page its own titleDuplicate titles make pages compete with each other. Each page should answer a different search.
- 03Make the description a reason to clickSay who it’s for, what they get, and what to do next. Google may rewrite it, but a good one gets used more often.
- 04Use the words people searchMatch the phrase your customers type, once, in plain language. Stuffing it in three times reads as spam.
Questions
Title tag and meta description questions
How long should a title tag be?
Google cuts titles at roughly 580 to 600 pixels on desktop, which is usually 50 to 60 characters. Wide letters like W and M use more room than i and l, which is why this tool measures pixels.
How long should a meta description be?
About 150 to 160 characters shows in full on desktop, and a little less on phones. Put the most important words first in case it gets cut.
Why does Google show different text than mine?
Google sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions to better match the search. A clear, accurate title and description get used as written more often.
How do I change these on a WordPress site?
An SEO plugin like Yoast adds title and description fields to every page and post. Paste your text there, then update the page.
